Bookshops with mission in mind

Shop-in-a-Box is one of our projects

The DILEMMA

  • Many places in Africa have no Christian bookshop because this has not      been affordable
  • Books are generally still too expensive in many locations
  • Set-up costs are too high, or reserve capital is too low

Open ContainerThe SOLUTION

  • Convert a container into a retail bookshop!
  • Located in the grounds of a church or a friendly business
  • Staffed by trained personnel
  • Sponsorship of start-up wages for six months
  • Stock replenished through our existing supply chain
  • Once viable and replaced with a building, the container can be moved and the model re-produced... again and again!

The QUESTION

Could you….
  • your family
  • your church
  • your Sunday School
  • your Christian Union
  • your company…

be involved to help us set up these container bookshops in needy parts of Kenya, Sierra Leone and even Liberia?

For just £9,500 (US$15,500) we can:

  • Locate a site for the Shop-in-a-Box
  • Purchase a container
  • Transport it to the site
  • Fit a sun shelter roof and windows and a proper door
  • Install shelving and other fittings, including a cash till
  • Buy suitable initial stock items and price them for the local market
  • Train the staff in Christian retail and evangelism
  • Cover staff costs for six months
  • Operate virtually cost free for a start up period, meaning most of the sales income can be used for buying replacement stock

How much would it cost to set up a Christian bookshop in the UK?? Much, much more than £9,500! But set up costs in a place like Kenya are still high if we are talking about a traditional, bricks & mortar bookshop.

Children in Kenya Shop-in-a-BoxCLC International (known in Kenya as CLC Christian Booklink) is looking to have an impact first in Nairobi and then beyond. We already have one container shop and it is working well. More are needed. But we need your help.

By taking a shipping container like the one in the picture and converting it into a shop, we reduce the costs so that people of all ages will be able to buy affordable Christian Books.  The shop staff, trained both to run the shop and also as evangelists, would be resourced by the existing supply chain that CLC has in each country.
